Why is his mom letting him do that?

I take a bit of pride in the fact that my kids say that from time to time.

I hope that other kids don’t ever have a reason to say that to their moms about me.

Last night, leaving the swimming pool, 5yo boy laying in middle of parking lot, not moving. 2yo brother walking by him, poking at him, wandering away. No adults in sight. My kids & I see him down. They (and I) worry that he’s hurt & hurry to him. As we get almost there, he sits up - just fine. I start my ‘Cars can’t see you when you’re down low & you could easily get run over’ lesson. As I turn away from him, towards my car, I see his mom & little brother standing beside their minivan’s open sliding door about 10 feet away (door was facing away from me when I was crossing lot, so I didn’t see her there until then). She smiles kind of sheepishly at me.

And, on the way to the car, the kids asked “Why did his mom let him do that?”.

So, I’m glad that my kids know that they shouldn’t do things like that. And, take a bit of pride in the fact that they know this.

I wish it never came up, though. I wish that there was never a time when a kid was allowed to do something dangerous or rude.
