The Pretender

Place: At the sand playground at our local pool, while the lifeguards were on their 7pm 10-minute break. Sun lowering to the point where I had to shade my eyes to see the kids from the picnic table where I was sitting.

Music: Jackson Browne’s ‘The Pretender’ was playing on the pool’s radio. OK, it wasn’t the perfect song, lyric-wise, but bits of it sounded just right…

Scene: Annie & Shelby were climbing the rope structure - something kind of like this:

They were both up at the top of the same pole - the one closest to me & my picnic table - back to back, one on each side. They both turned to look at me. And waved.

Just worked together so nicely with the music, time of day, weather …
